Could the Web Go Paid?

Quite a bit of content on the web today is available at no charge, but is ad-supported. With many people installing ad-blockers (or their admins doing it centrally), this revenue stream is bound to take a hit. Will that drive a shift to micropayments?

  1. Ad blockers work on pop up ads not on those on the page. The shift in advertising will be towards classifieds or the Google style targeted ads. The web wont go paid just as Napster failed when it did. People will simply shift to another web.

Ad blockers do block ads on the page and not just popups (maybe some don't, but others do).

No matter what style of ads (classifieds or targeted ones) are shown, they can be blocked. My proxy blocks Google ads, for instance.

I don't understand what you mean by people "shifting to another web".
